Presented at the 2026 Conference of Interpreter Trainers Radiance to Roots conference.
Building the Framework
This work builds on our Sociocultural Model of Interpreting (SCMI) that is rooted in and committed to access, accessibility, inclusion, equity, and justice. The SCMI is designed to help interpreters understand:
- who we are,
- the work we do (including the factors we must consider in crafting effective, respectful interpretations),
- the decisions we make,
- the roles we enact within interactions and events.
Goal of Interpreter Education
We believe the goal of interpreter education is to create a transformational learning experience where we:
Provide students tools, skills, knowledge & resources to see and address the systematic injustices in partnership with deaf community members while providing access.
Reflection Cycle
We believe the reflection cycle and support transformational learning experiences.
